This work examines the bargain that is at the core of the relationship between the United States and Saudi Arabia. In exchange for access to discounted oil from Saudi Arabia, the United States military offers protection to the Saudis when threatened by its neighbors, including Iraq and Iran. In, United States and Saudi Arabia (Oil/Protection), I excised every headline in the New York Times from 1940 to 2008 that related to this bargain. These headlines are listed in chronological order and color-coded.
